Anti-normalization events in Gaza Strip and Tehran draw dozens of BDS activists

Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) groups joined in with the Iranian regime, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other terrorist groups for virtual events that bashed normalization with Israel.

The two events, in January, called “Year to Confront Normalization” and “Together Against Normalization” were broadcast the same day from both Gaza and Tehran.

The events were organized in response to the four Muslim countries which normalized relations with Israel last year. The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan all signed peace treaties with Israel between September and December of last year in peace deals brokered by the US.

“Why is 2021 a year to confront #normalization with the Israeli occupation? For the tortured children, for the heartbroken mothers, and for the murdered angels,” said an advertised post on Facebook. They left out the fact that Palestinians leaders have murdered many of their own people, arrested and executed suspected collaborators, have little freedom of speech, press or religion, enforce strict Islamic rule in Gaza, use women and children as human shields and have all but wrecked their economy by not seeking normalization with Israel.

During his address in Tehran, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh praised BDS organizations.

“We see good results to the work of our diaspora in raising awareness, cutting relations with the occupation and delegitimizing it,” he said.

Our campaign “mainly aims to make everyone understand that normalization is treason,” said Sheikh Yusuf Abbas from Gaza.

Also speaking at the event in Gaza, Mahathir Mohamad, the former prime minister of Malaysia, said Jews are “hook-nosed” and “control the world by proxy.”

The Tehran event was aired on the pro-Hezbollah network Al-Mayadeen while the simultaneous Gaza event was aired on Facebook Live and Al-Mayadeen alongside the Iranian event. Facebook takes a bold stand against former President Trump’s rhetoric, but has no problem with entities calling for the genocide of Israeli Jews.
