Former Miss Iraq, Sarah Idan, spoke out against the vitriolic anti-Israel efforts of ex-Pink Floyd member Roger Waters who is now calling for the world to boycott the Eurovision contest this year because it is taking place in Tel Aviv.
“An artist has power to inspire,” Idan wrote on Twitter. “Make sure you use your power for good and to bring people together. I never understood artists who boycott an entire country, you’re singing for people not for governments.”
Idan befriended Miss Israel Adar Gandelsman during a Miss Universe competition in 2017 and has since been forced to flee her native Iraq for posing with the Jewish contestant. The woman’s bravery is in stark contrast to Waters sweeping claims against Israel and Israelis.
Waters said he was proud of a Swiss petition that demanded Eurovision “pull out of the finals in Tel Aviv.” He compared Israelis to aliens, although “it’s giving aliens a bad name.”
Idan still has the photo of herself and Gandelsman on her Instagram account.
“I want to stress that the purpose of the picture was only to express hope and desire for peace between the two countries,” she wrote adding that the photo does not signal support for the Israeli government.
